Chennai: On Tuesday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) claimed that the DMK-led government put Prime Minister Narendra Modi in danger due to a “major security lapse” during his visit to Chennai on July 29 to inaugurate the Chess Olympiad.
K Annamalai, the head of the BJP in Tamil Nadu, has asked the governor in Raj Bhavan to direct the DMK-led state government to conduct an impartial investigation into this matter and to prosecute anybody found to be responsible. This comes days after the AIADMK complained to the governor about the “deteriorating” law and order situation in Tamil Nadu.
According to the BJP’s submission to the governor, “The event was organised in a highly sensitive state like Tamil Nadu in the presence of many dignitaries, and extra security measures were essential, especially while our Honourable Prime Minister was coming.”
The majority of the handheld metal detectors, door frame metal detectors, and bomb detectors employed in the security setup were found to be out of commission and in need of repair or replacement.
K Annamalai, the head of the BJP in Tamil Nadu, has asked the Governor in Raj Bhavan to direct the DMK-led state government to conduct an impartial investigation into this matter and to prosecute anybody found to be responsible.
The party also asked for an impartial assessment of the security device inventory to be done.
“By compromising on the security devices, the State government has not only messed up in making sure a key area is sanitised before a VVIP’s visit but has also missed providing the security staff on the ground with functional security devices, putting our Honourable Prime Minister at risk,” the party said.
“This issue also appears in other key strategic locations, including temples, monuments, government buildings, and locations with sizable public gatherings.
We are informed that a thorough audit will also be required of the security equipment deployed in these locations.
The BJP chapter in Tamil Nadu also claimed that following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit in July, central agencies had made note of the errors.
The state police agency then sent a circular to all police stations requesting an update on the status of all security measures.
The BJP stated, “Unfortunately, this status report should have been called prior to our Honorable Prime Minister visiting the state.”
The party, like its ally AIADMK, also brought up the riots that started after a school kid committed suicide in Kallakurichi in July and the recent Coimbatore blast that happened on October 23 and is currently being examined by the National Investigation Agency.
“Every day that goes by, the State’s law and order situation gets worse.
The Coimbatore suicide bombing occurred as a result of the Tamil Nadu State Government’s failure to respond to the precise intelligence input provided by the Central Intelligence agencies.
The State Intelligence Department is still being utilised by the DMK Government, although not for legitimate government purposes.
